Metcalfe Streetscape Improvements Planned
Thomasville Landmarks is taking the lead in submitting a grant to the Georgia Department of Transportation that will benefit the Metcalfe Historic Township if it is awarded. The Transportation Enhancement Grant is a competitive grant that can be used for transportation-related improvements, such as sidewalks, street trees, benches, lighting, signage and more. Below is a concept plan developed in conjunction with landscape architects Scott Chastain and Jeremy Floyd, and funded by the Metcalfe Heritage Society.
The plan very generally lays out improvements that are designed to do three things:
- Slow traffic
- Encourage economic investment
- Improve recreational opportunities
The Metcalfe Heritage Society is also funding an engineering study which will determine precise costs for these improvements. For whatever amount is applied for, 20% must be provided in the form of a local match. We are currently seeking in-kind and cash contributions in order to provide the matching funds, expecting that we will need to raise between $50,000 and $100,000.
The Thomas County Commission is the official sponsor for the grant application and have indicated that they are willing to help with in-kind services as they are able, but we will not ask for any funding from them. Hood Lumber is also a partner in the project. We will also work closely with the Metcalfe Community Association before any detailed construction documents are completed.
