Community Preservation Program
Thomasville Landmarks' Community Preservation Program is
designed to help the owners of historic homes with exterior
repairs to their house. In order for the house to be eligible it
must be 50 years or older, be in a state of good preservation
with most original building materials in tact and be structurally
sound with a leak-free roof. The historic homes must be
owned by those who are elderly, disabled or on a fixed or
limited income.
The program is offered at no cost to the homeowners thanks to
a grant from the Lewis Hall and Mildred Sasser Singletary
Foundation. We also receive support from the Southwest
Georgia Community Action Council and local sponsors.
Community Preservation is a volunteer-based project with a
large percentage of the work done by community-minded
individuals with a commitment to preservation.

Since the program is done annually, Landmarks encourages applicants to contact us
all year round. The Community Preservation Committee reviews applications once a
year. Only a select number of homes are chosen per year, not all applicants are
accepted. Find the application here.
Work on the homes can last up to eight weeks. In three months, the houses are
scraped and sanded. Some deteriorated wood is replaced. Some windows and
doors are repaired or replaced as needed. Due to budgetary constraints, we
typically are unable to roof houses. Access to electricity and water may be required.
Only the exterior of the homes are addressed, we do not work on the interior. Work
begins on the homes at the end of January and continues until the volunteer work
days in March. Community Preservation gets people involved in hands-on
preservation; Volunteers prime, caulk and paint the exterior of the homes and often
assist with landscaping, lunch preparation and clean-up.

The Community Preservation Program is truly a
community event and thrives from the support it gets
both financially and through volunteerism. As a
volunteer-based program we welcome participation from
anyone. Groups, families and individuals are welcome.
No skill or experience is necessary. Lunch and event
T-shirts are provided to all volunteers during the
workdays in March. Sponsors receive recognition on the
T-shirts, in press and receive event T-shirts. It is only
through the generous donations of sponsors and the
time and commitment of volunteers, that we are able to
continue to provide this program year after year. To
date, Landmarks has helped to preserve 29 structures
with the help of close to 1,400 volunteers.
