2008 Heritage Education Teachers Workshop
Thomasville Landmarks will host its 16th annual Heritage Education Teachers
Workshop June 23-27, 2008. Last year we had sixteen participants. Each year
teachers and paraprofessionals are invited to participate in this week long
workshop. The workshop is offered at no cost to the participants. The purpose
of the program is to familiarize educators with their local historic resources.
The workshop is not a lecture series, but a series of activities that are hands-on
and involve visiting community resources. Sites visited include the Old City
Cemetery, the Old Magnolia Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, the Thomas County
Historical Society museum, a presentation at the Historic Midway School by Jack
Hadley, a visit to Greenwood Plantation, a presentation at the Thomasville
Genealogical, History and Fine Arts Library and an architectural walking tour of
Dawson Street, a National Register District. Our focus is to help educators utilize
these and other local resources with planned activities to teach all curriculum
areas, such as math, English, history and social studies. Completion of the
workshop entitles the participant to three Professional Learning Units (PLU).
Landmarks and the participating speakers and organizations are happy to tailor our
programming to meet the needs of any classroom and often bring our programs to
the schools.
