About Us...
Thomasville Landmarks is a non-profit,
historic preservation organization
dedicated to protecting, preserving and
promoting the architecture, heritage and
history of the Thomas County area. In
1964, a small group of concerned
citizens banded together to encourage
the preservation of Thomasville’s unique
environment. The movement started in
response to a crisis: the town had just
lost its Italianate Library from the
downtown area, and other important
landmarks were threatened. Landmarks
was incorporated in 1966 and has grown
tremendously over the years.

In 1966, we helped to save the brick
pavement in our downtown and a tree we call
The Big Oak. We held our first Preservation
Barbeque, now simply called our Annual
Picnic, at Greenwood Plantation in 1968. We
helped to save the Lapham-Patterson House
in 1970; it was later designated a National
Historic Landmark. In 1980, Landmarks
acquired the oldest two story house in
Thomasville. The Hardy Bryan House had
fallen into disrepair. Standing vacant and
badly damaged just one block from the
historic downtown business district, the
Landmarks board saw an opportunity.
The Lapham Patterson House
The home was purchased, restored and put back into use as the headquarters for
Thomasville Landmarks, Inc. During this period, volunteers completed a city and county
historic resource survey and numerous National Register nominations. With our help,
Thomasville became one of the first three Main Street cities in 1982, and has attracted
shoppers from miles away ever since.

subscription to and recognition in our quarterly newsletter Oak Leaves and invitations to
several members-only events throughout the year. Our Board of Directors is made up of
community-minded volunteers who are interested in preservation and history in Thomas
County.
